I try to photograph for a couple hours each week. I've been dealing with tremendous fatigue from a nasty cold - but yesterday it was a beautiful and overcast so off I went to Cave Run. Finding a turtle shell made it worth it. I followed a few mostly waterless creek beds and didn't encounter anyone for a couple hours.

All the "specimens" are required to be less than 2 x 3 inches. Whenever I spend time in new landscapes - I pick up small objects. I have a huge collection, and will draw these in between projects. My goal is to make at least 10 a year....and when I have 100, they will be shown together when I can find a big enough wall.

The last couple months I've made the acquaintance of a few 6 and 8 legged friends.

Met this one inside the James Turrel piece at Cheekwood in Nashville.

This one lived at my back door for many months until I decided that my arachnophobic housemate could indeed have a heart attack if she saw it. When I moved this one to the backyard, it was three inches.

I found this one in the Lowe's parking lot stranded on a red cart in the sea of concrete. I brought her to a nearby field.

I like the idea of spotlights but in nature. This relates to how I focus on small areas when I'm drawing the complexity of nature.
- When I was in Colorado this summer, I was high in the mountains where cattle are allowed to freely roam. They heavily impact the terrain and create tunnels through the underbrush. I photographed these often and will using the images as reference for a while.

Here are 3 paintings I did this summer for the Carlton Hotel in Downtown Minneapolis.
All these were based on paintings I had done previously. They identified works they were interested in and I then did digital sketches to include the color orange. After they accepted the sketches, I proceeded onto the paintings. The 2 abstracts are in the front lobby and the pine needles painting is near the back, toward the elevators.

For Emerging Terrain in Omaha, NE

Emerging Terrain’s project “Stored Potential” is a large-scale installation covering the silos of a vacant grain elevator near downtown Omaha, Nebraska in order to reposition the structure in the landscape. This second set of designs have subject matter to initiate conversation about the fused nature of transportation and transport in relation to the grain elevator, the citywide hiking trail (once rail) it terminates, and the 76,000 vehicles passing it each day on the cross-continental Interstate 80.

My multi-layered interpretation of the theme of intertwinines the networks of constructed roadways in Omaha with ‘transport’ formations of ant trails – the resulting image is a visualization of the similarity and interconnection between human and natural realms of movement. The honeycomb form of ‘food storage’ layers yet another important process into the overall image and idea. All these networks represented here at similart scale blurs the hierarchy of our often competing worlds and renders them equal in importance.

The exhibition in Houston is art inspired by recent residencies along rivers in the Midwest & on the Pacific Northwest Coast. The residency at the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology was all that I expected and more.

I hadn't traveled as far north on the west coast til last month. So far its my favorite landscape in the U.S. I loved that in the winter, green is more plentiful than any other color. And having grown up in a tropical rainforest - I didn't mind all the rain. The center sits up on Cascade Head and about a 10 minute walk to the coastline where the Salmon River Estuary meets the Pacific. I hope to be back there soon.

A careful exploration of nature takes shape in Kalk's artist's book. The River from North Mississippi Regional Park is a book of drawings and paintings that create a portrait of a single spot on the river in Minneapolis from winter through fall. Kalk's chosen area is on the river embankment, across from a small island where herons nest. The artist elaborates: "From here you almost forget you are in the city except one can hear the hum of traffic from I-94, see the blue Camden Bridge that spans the river nearby, and decipher the city in the distance. I drew and painted on site when possible; the winter images are painted from my own photographs. I also filmed the site multiple times during the year." The culminating artist's book features an 8-foot by 9-inch painting of the river in a 180-degree view, divided into two 4-foot accordion folds. Additional pages illustrate delicate details: roots, insects, flowers and additional views of the landscape.

I'm finishing up a grant project from the Minnesota Center for Book Arts/Jerome Foundation. The works are 9 x 12, 9 x 9 and 9 inches x 8 ft. For the book, looks like I'll be printing a total of 20, with 2 being two 4 foot accordion folds of the 8 ft painting. They are done in graphite, acrylic, and some ink. I drew and painted on site when I could but the winter images are from photographs I took. I tried drawing out there when snow was on the ground - just couldn't work out there in the MN cold.

I've moved to eastern KY for a year (maybe longer). I've been here now for 6 weeks and I already adore the landscape. I live in the small college town of Morehead that is within the Daniel Boone National Forest. I'm a 15 minute drive from Cave Run Lake and and within an hour from both the Red River Gorge/Natural Bridge State Park and Carter Caves State Park. Needless to say - nature abounds here and soon the fall colors will dominate - can't wait!

Pine Needles 15" x 15' Drawing

My project at this residency is a very long continuous drawing called “At Pine Needles.” Upon arriving at Pine Needles, I spent a couple of days scouting the area for the ideal location for the project. Upon finding a stretch of terrain on the bank of the St. Croix that had a variety of live and desiccated plants, exposed roots, rocks, branches and other objects of interest (like multiple dragonfly's exuvia) I measured out an area equal to the length and width of my roll of paper, 15 inches (with a couple extra at top and bottom) x 15+ feet. Each day the weather allows, I sit on the ground and draw the ground/embankment in front of me. The days where the weather doesn’t allow for working outside, I have a have a collection of objects I found in the area to use as reference for other smaller drawings. I've also thoroughly photographed the site (and re-photograph every day I draw outside) in case there are too many cold or wet days....I want the drawing to be complete by the end of the residency, so if needed, I might have to draw from the photos. I admit I'm getting tired of drawing rocks and pine needles, but I am determined to finish with the same attitude I started with. I plan to allow the drawing to breathe by having areas of just line work and moving in and out of extreme realism, but things could change. So far there has been some rain and lots of cold, hoping for more sun! 2 full weeks to go.

I'm giving a lecture on the art and culture of the Sawiyano tribe tomorrow at University Center Rochester. Its been 9 years since my last trip to the place I grew up...I miss it, sometimes intensely. Going through images for lectures is good, but always triggers a deep longing to return. Here are few shots of the area where I grew up.

I'm in Claremont, CA for a conference in LA. My friend Emily Smith is going to grad school out here. She and I share a love for collecting plant matter - so we went to a botanical garden and up into Mt Baldy today. I'm loving the crazy desert plants.

MCAD Art Sale, Nov 21 & 22

This weekend is MCAD's annual art sale. I will have work there (and for the next 2 years).

The 2008 event takes place on Friday, Nov. 21, and Saturday, Nov. 22 on the first and second floors of MCAD's Main Building.

From paintings, prints and photographs to sculpture, furniture, toys, clothing, jewelry, accessories and more, each purchase directly supports the up-and-coming artist who created the work.

The MCAD Annual Art Sale has gained a tremendous reputation as the metro's top destination for affordable, appreciable artwork by leading-edge artists who are creating not only what's new, but also what's next, with praise and exposure pouring in from the Star Tribune, Mpls.St.Paul, Minnesota Monthly, METRO, City Pages and KARE 11.

The 10th anniversary event in 2007 offered more than 10,000 works by 400 artists.

Friday, Nov. 21: 6 to 9 p.m.
Advance tickets are available for $35 online and by phone. They can also be purchased at MCAD's on-campus book and art supply store, the Art Cellar. Admission is $40 at the door on the night of the event. Valet parking will be available for $5 at MCAD's Main Entrance.
